Out in the Country, Close to It All: What's Within 10 Miles of Gopher Hill
Published September 25, 2026 · By Roger Reed
28154 Gopher Hill Rd sits on more than five acres of private land, but out in the country does not mean out of the way. Within about ten miles of the front gate you will find one of Florida's largest state parks, farms you can actually visit, wildlife experiences you cannot get in a subdivision, and diners where the waitress knows the regulars' orders. The result is the best of both worlds: total privacy at home, real activity nearby.
One of Florida's Largest State Parks, Minutes Away
Myakka River State Park sits along the north side of Myakka City itself, and the main entrance on State Road 72 is a roughly 10 to 15 minute drive from the estate. At about 37,000 acres, it is one of Florida's biggest and oldest parks, and everything you have heard about it holds up. The Canopy Walkway lifts you into a treetop oak and palm hammock, the airboat tours in the park cross Upper Myakka Lake for close-up looks at alligators and wading birds, and the classic open-air tram rolls through the prairies. Hikers have a roughly 39-mile loop trail, and canoe and kayak rentals put you on the Myakka River itself, a designated Florida Wild and Scenic River. A modest per-vehicle entrance fee applies; check floridastateparks.org for current rates and hours before you go.
Wildlife Encounters Without the Theme Park
A few minutes down the road, the Myakka Elephant Ranch on Verna Bethany Road (about 10 minutes from the estate, reservations required) is a nonprofit sanctuary home to three Asian elephants with roughly 30 acres to roam. Small-group encounters let guests prepare snacks, feed and bathe the elephants alongside professional caregivers, and the sessions are educational rather than circus-like. Since they book by reservation only, it is worth planning ahead and calling ahead.
If horses are more your speed, Colonel Herrmann's Royal Lipizzan Ranch on Singletary Road is about 8 to 10 minutes away. It is a genuine working ranch devoted to the famous white Lipizzan stallions, and visitors can tour the facility and watch dressage-style performances right on the property. Between the elephants and the stallions, you can see more exotic animal life inside one ten-mile radius than in most of coastal Florida.
Farms You Can Drive To, Not Just Past
Working farms are the backbone of Myakka City, and several of them welcome the public. Dakin Dairy Farms on Betts Road (roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the estate) is a family-owned dairy with a farm market selling milk, cheese, butter and cream bottled on site, a cafe serving breakfast and lunch, a Saturday farmers market, and seasonal farm tours that include hayrides, feeding calves and pig races. Hours vary by season, so check the farm's site before heading out.
Closer still, Heritage Bee Farm on MJ Road sits within about 10 minutes of the estate. It is a family-run apiary where visitors can tour the hives, learn how honey gets from flower to jar, and pick up raw honey produced on the property. It is an easy, hands-on outing that families remember longer than any screen ever could.
Small-Town Dining in Every Direction
You do not have to drive toward the coast for a good meal. Myakka City Tavern & Grill on Manatee Avenue is about 5 minutes from the property, a neighborhood tavern and grill serving burgers, wings and cold drinks in the heart of town. Silver Star East Restaurant on State Road 70, also about 5 minutes away, is the classic FL-70 diner for breakfast and lunch with a loyal local following. And Dakin Dairy Farms' cafe (Pete's Place) turns the farm's own dairy products into breakfast and lunch, which pairs nicely with a stop at the market on the way out.
Worth the Drive: Road-Trip Favorites
A few favorites sit a little beyond the ten-mile circle, and they are worth the miles. Solomon's Castle near Ona is about 45 minutes east: an aluminum-plated castle hand-built by sculptor Howard Solomon, with stained-glass windows, metal sculptures and its famous Boat in the Moat restaurant. Peace River airboat charters in Arcadia, roughly 45 minutes southeast, offer captain-guided airboat runs on the Peace River. And if reptiles fascinate the family, Iguanaland in Punta Gorda, about an hour south, bills itself as one of the largest reptile collections in the country. Each makes an honest Saturday adventure from the estate.
And When You Need the City: SR 70 and I-75
None of this country living comes at the cost of the coast. State Road 70 runs west from the property straight into Bradenton in about 25 minutes, and I-75 connects north to Tampa and south to Sarasota. Lakewood Ranch's shopping and dining is roughly 20 minutes away, downtown Sarasota and Bradenton are about 40 minutes, Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is around 40 minutes, and downtown Tampa is about 80 minutes in normal traffic. Hospitals, airports, groceries and big-box retail are all a manageable drive down the corridor, which is exactly the balance this property was chosen for: five private acres, and the entire Gulf Coast within an hour.
Privacy is one reason to love this estate. Knowing there is a full world of farms, wildlife, trails and good food within a short drive is the other one. Come spend a day out here: walk the river, meet the elephants, grab a milkshake at Dakin's, and then test the commute back to the coast for yourself. What would you put on your must-visit list within 10 miles of home?
